Donald Trump and Michael Flynn. ABC News is reporting that Former National Security Advisor pleads guilty to lying to the FBI
Friday morning, it was announced that former National Security Advisor for the Trump Administration, retired Lt. General Michael Flynn, plead guilty in federal court to the charge of lying to the FBI. The crime carries a sentence of up to 5 years but according to sources Flynn won’t serve a day.
ABC News’s Brian Ross has reported that Flynn, in his plea deal, has agreed to testify against the President of the United States, Donald Trump, as ordering him to make contact with the Russians during the campaign and after Trump was elected.
In a statement, Flynn said he acknowledged that his actions “were wrong, and, through my faith in God, I am working to set things right.
“My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel’s Office reflect a decision I made in the best interests of my family and of our country. I accept full responsibility for my actions,” he said.
Yet the White House is downplaying the guilty plea and the statement that Flynn is cooperating with the special counsel stating that, “nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn. The conclusion of this phase of the special counsel’s work demonstrates again that the special counsel is moving with all deliberate speed and clears the way for a prompt and reasonable conclusion,” Ty Cobb, a White House lawyer, said in a statement.
