What is Giving Tuesday?

Entering its sixth year, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year and a growing catalog of resources.

How you can help right here in Upper Darby/Drexel Hill

In every neighborhood, no matter how hard they work, there are families that are 2 weeks away from homelessness.  During the holiday season, we seem to notice those who struggle more although, we as a community could help out all year long.

In our neighborhood, we have families, parents who know that will not be able to provide for their children with gifts to make their holiday bright. Right now, you can help those in need by donating to the Marine Corp’s Toys for Tots Program. There are locations throughout the area. But if you would like your gifts to stay more local there are two toy drives that will go to children right here in your hometown.

First there is the annual toy drive that the Upper Darby Sentinel News sponsors.

Each year neighbors nominate local families in need who just need a little help to make the children feel special this holiday season. There is a huge need for boxed games, arts and crafts, toys for boys between the ages of 4 to 16. This year the need for girls who are ages 4, 10 and 16. Each year the readers of the Upper Darby Sentinel have made Christmas special for 25 families. The appreciation shown by the families is heartfelt and overwhelming. The program really proves how a simple act of kindness goes a long way. The second program is having it’s first ever toy drive. The Knute Bonner Christmas Toy Drive will take place this Saturday at Haggerty’s Cafe at 2373 MacDade Blvd, Holmes PA. The event will take place at 10 am. The drive has been created by Erin Hudyma who lost her dad but wants to keep up the tradition of helping families in need. According to a post on Facebook, Erin wrote, “My dad always helped a local family in need& we want to keep that same true spirit of Christmas 🎄 going, by helping a local family in is the first year we are hosting this toy drive as an event.. last year’s family was done through my home.. We hope for a great turn out so please help get the word with little kids, adults with no kids or older kids are welcome there too.. THIS EVENT IS FOR EVERYONE!” What could be better seeing Santa while helping out a family in need.
