President Donald Trump announced Thursday that under his administration, he would take the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord. This action by the President makes the United States the third country to not participate in the accord. The other two are Syria and Nicaragua.  “We’re getting out,” Trump said at a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden in which he decried the Paris accord’s “draconian” financial and economic burdens. He said American withdrawal “represents a reassertion of American sovereignty.”

President Trump then announced that the United States would begin negotiations either to re-enter the Paris accord or to have a new agreement “on terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers.” The leaders of Italy, France and Germany quickly announced their disappointment over Trump’s decision but there would not be any negotiations. “We deem the momentum generated in Paris in December 2015 irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris Agreement cannot be renegotiated since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies.”
