Just days after President Trump arrived back in the United States after a 9-day trip abroad, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday, Europe “really must take our fate into our own hands.” This examination of the relationship between the United States and its fellow members of NATO, comes after President Trump refused to say whether he backed the Paris Climate Control Accord and for embarrassing other NATO members for paying a smaller share of their country’s budget on defense. Merkel told a beer hall rally in Munich that the days when her continent could rely on others was “over to a certain extent. This is what I have experienced in the last few days.” President Trump also attacked Germany auto makers for a trade imbalance with the U.S. The fact that European countries feel as though they cannot count on the U. S to support their governments is a huge shift in policy. Merkel may feel that the U. S can’t be counted on due to what Trump also said, “The Germans are bad, very bad,” German news magazine Der Spiegel reported. “Look at the millions of cars they’re selling in the U.S. Terrible,” he reportedly said. “We will stop this.” Splitting apart the partnerships between the United States and its European allies will have Russia gleeful as they would like to return to the top power across Europe.
