The Upper Darby Sentinel News Person of the Year 2016

Upper Darby Sentinel News Person of the Year 2016

Pennsylvania State Representative James Santora

Each year, the UDSN awards an individual our Person of the Year award. Last year, we gave our Person of the Year to Mayor Tom Micozzie of Upper Darby who has worked tirelessly for the community. He continues his work for the citizens of Upper Darby with his efforts to have continued growth in the township, to continue a quality of life that will bring and keep residents and keep taxes from increasing.

This year, there were some great people we could have named as our person of the year.  Philadelphia Police Officer Jesse Hartnett, 33 who after being shot at 11 times while sitting in his squad car at a red light. Even after being shot, Harnett fired at this assailant hitting him. There is also the Folcroft Police Officer Chris Dorman, was shot in the neck, face and shoulder around 9:45 a.m. in the rear of an apartment building on Elmwood Avenue on June 24th, 2016. After being hit 7 times Dorman is returned to work within months.  There is also the Upper Darby Police Force for their work in reducing crime and drug related crimes in the township.  All of these people could have been our Person of the Year.

Our Person of the Year for 2016 is actually two lawmakers Pennsylvania State Representative James Santora of the 163rd District. This year alone, Santora, arranged for grants to both Upper Darby and Havertown for projects to enhance those communities. He helped to fund a study to make the roads safer in Upper Darby with the passage of $1.5 Million Safety Project for the roads State Road and Lansdowne Ave.

Santora is also helped to pass legislation that legalized Lyft and Uber ride sharing companies. Santora (R-Delaware) and Nick Miccarelli (R-Delaware) amended the bill so that those who have disabilities would be able to share in the program. “In addition to legalizing ride-sharing services in the Commonwealth, this law will provide the necessary vans for people with disabilities. They have not been forgotten, and that is extremely important,” Santora said.

On a personal note, Santora is always there for constituents even if they no longer live right in the neighborhood anymore. Last year, as one father was fighting for his life with kidney cancer, Jamie Santora, the dad, the neighbor and just a great guy, waded into the waters of insurance companies and pharmaceuticals companies to help this family just have more time, time that meant the world to this family. With his help, the help of local news outlets like the Upper Darby Sentinel News, that family did get the medication that gave the children of this man exactly what they needed, time.

For the reasons above and so many more, State Representative James Santora is our pick for our Person of the Year 2016.

Starting on January 1, new smoking provisions will go into effect throughout the city of Philadelphia. The new provisions are aimed at reducing the exposure of children to tobacco products.

Effective starting in the New Year, officials are also hiking up enforcement of laws against illegal tobacco sales.

“These new measures put Philadelphia out front as a leader in the effort to protect children from the harmful effects of tobacco products,” said Dr. Thomas Farley, Commissioner of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. “This Administration is committed to making sure our kids don’t start smoking.”

The new provisions include tobacco-free school zones prohibiting new tobacco retailer permits within 500 feet of any K-12 school. In addition, the new provisions increases the tobacco retailer permit fee to $300 dollars; this hike will cover the costs associated with enhanced enforcement of the prohibition on sales to children.

Trump, who has for weeks voiced skepticism about Russia’s role in the hacking of Democratic email accounts and other hostile actions, said he would seek to learn more about the situation next week.

“Nevertheless, in the interest of our country and its great people, I will meet with leaders of the intelligence community next week in order to be updated on the facts of this situation,” the president-elect said in his statement.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. on Thursday released its most detailed report yet on Russia’s efforts to interfere in the U.S. presidential election by hacking American political sites and email accounts. The 13-page joint analysis by the Homeland Security Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation was first such report ever to attribute malicious cyber activity to a particular country or actors.

It was also the first time the U.S. has officially and specifically tied intrusions into the Democratic National Committee to hackers with the Russian civilian and military intelligence services, the FSB and GRU, expanding on an Oct. 7 accusation by the Obama administration.

The report said the intelligence services were involved in “an ongoing campaign of cyber-enabled operations directed at the U.S. government and its citizens.” It added, “In some cases, (the Russian intelligence services’) actors masqueraded as third parties, hiding behind false online personas designed to cause the victim to misattribute the source of the attack.”

Over the summer stolen emails from Democrats were posted by an online persona known as Guccifer 2.0, believed by U.S. officials to be linked to Russia. Outrage over documents that appeared to show favoritism for Hillary Clinton forced the DNC’s chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to resign.

The U.S. released the report as President Barack Obama sanctioned the GRU and the FSB, the GRU’s leadership and companies which the U.S. said support the GRU.

Thursday’s sanctions were the administration’s first use of a 2015 executive order for combatting cyberattacks against critical infrastructure and commercial espionage. Because election systems aren’t considered critical infrastructure, Obama amended the order Thursday to allow for sanctions on entities “interfering with or undermining election processes or institutions.”

The retaliation against Russia, just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, culminated months of political handwringing about how and whether to respond to Moscow’s meddling. U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russia’s goal was to help Trump win — an assessment Trump has dismissed as ridiculous. Trump said Thursday he would meet with the intelligence community’s leaders next week for an update on the situation.

The report did not go far beyond confirming details already disclosed by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which was hired to investigate the DNC hacks.

It described the intelligence services’ use of “spearphishing” — fake emails intended to trick victims into typing in their user names and passwords. At least one person opened attachments with malicious software. The report noted that actors “likely associated” with Russian intelligence services are continuing to engage in spearphishing campaigns, including one launched just days after the U.S. election.

The DNC was infiltrated by the FSB in summer 2015 and again by the GRU in spring 2016 using spearphishing emails that often appeared to come from legitimate or official organizations, the report said.

Russian officials have denied any involvement in hacking U.S. political sites and emails.

The report provides clues for cybersecurity workers in the private sector to identify compromised systems and prevent more intrusions. The Homeland Security Department said it has already included this information within its own cyber threat information-sharing program, which automatically flags threats in real time for participating companies and agencies.

U.S. officials also provided antivirus vendors with two malicious software samples used by Russian intelligence services.

In Leaked Tape Mitch McConnell Admits The Koch Brothers Are Running The Republican Party — John Oliver Mason

In a leaked audio tape of the Koch brothers top secret June 2014 retreat, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) not only admitted that the Republicans would be lost without the Kochs, and revealed who the real power is in the GOP.

McConnell opened his remarks by saying, “Is this working? I know it’s been a long, but very inspiring day. And I want to start by thanking you, Charles and David for the important work you’re doing. I don’t know where we’d be without you, and um, and I want (inaudible) for rallying, uh, to the cause.”

Mitch McConnell has voted against raising the minimum wage 17 times in his career. He has filibustered every recent attempt to raise the minimum wage in the current Congress, so anyone with half a brain should not be surprised that he promised that he wouldn’t raise the mininum wage if he becomes Majority Leader.

The main topic of his speech was Citizens United, and how the wealthy and corporations should control our elections. In the process of praising Citizens United, McConnell described how the Koch infested Supreme Court has opened the door to conservative billionaires buying the government, “And we’ve had a series of cases since then that I’ve filed amicus briefs in and had lawyers arguing in. We now have, I think, the most free and open system we’ve had in modern times. The Supreme Court allowed all of you to participate in the process in a variety of different ways. You can give to the candidate of your choice. You can give to Americans for Prosperity, or something else, a variety of different ways to push back against the party of government. It has nothing to do with overly political speech.”

The little part at the end where McConnell states that the billionaire dollars have nothing to do with overt political speech was a total lie. The Koch money is about buying and electing the candidates who will carry out the conservative billionaire agenda.

Everything links together. Without the Koch infested Supreme Court, the Republican billionaire funding pipeline wouldn’t exist. The Koch billionaire group is trying to cut the people out of the democratic process in order to create a government that revolves around their own interests.

The leaked tapes prove that the Republican Party revolves around the interests of billionaires and big corporations. This is obvious to anyone who watches their behavior on a daily basis, but McConnell’s remarks are the first leaked to the public admission of the importance of the Koch brothers to the success of the Republican Party.

The GOP is a Koch organized and funded operation. The Kochs set the agenda, and if Republicans take back the Senate, the American people will have given control of the Congress to the Koch brothers.

Carl Paladino, Trump Ally, Aplogizes for Obama “Ape” Comments

What may have started as a really bad joke has turned into a political hot potato. Carl Paladino, the former Republican nominee for Governor of New York and an adviser to President-elect Trump was asked this simple question by the Artvoice, a weekly newspaper in Buffalo, New York, what would you like to happen in 2017 and what they like to see go away next year. Paladino was not the only person asked but his answer which he answered in writing is what has people talking.

Paladino wrote, ““Obama catches mad cow disease after being caught having relations with a Herford (sic). He dies before his trial and is buried in a cow pasture next to Valerie Jarret (sic), who died weeks prior, after being convicted of sedition and treason, when a Jihady (sic) cell mate mistook her for being a nice person and decapitated her.” Valerie Jarrett is a senior adviser to the president.

Paladino wasn’t finished yet. No this man who once sat in the Governor’s Mansion in New York, continued to share his racist tidings. This time he went after the First Lady, Michelle Obama. Paladino wrote, “I’d like her to return to being a male and let loose in the outback of Zimbabwe where she lives comfortably in a cave with Maxie, the gorilla.” That’s right, this former Governor of New York repeated a Facebook fake news story that Mrs. Obama is actually transgender. He then took the racist rant further with his gorilla comment.

Now on Tuesday, Paladino has offered an apology for his antics. Worse though, is the people who applauded his original comments. On Facebook, there were thousands who laughed and agreed with Paladino that Mrs. Obama is a transgender male. There are thousands who believe the nonsense that has been written on Facebook as supposed news articles.  Paladino, offered this apology, ““I never intended to hurt the minority community who I spent years trying to help out of the cycle of poverty in our inner cities, to them I apologize.” Paladino continued attacking Obama, though, as a “traitor to American values.”
