PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Amtrak says a train traveling from New York to Savannah, Georgia has derailed in Chester, Delaware County. Two people are confirmed dead after the accident. According to officials the Amtrak Palmetto Train 89 struck a piece of equipment, a backhoe, which caused the lead engine to derail.
The accident was reported around 8 a.m. Sunday near Booth Street on the Palmetto train 89.
According to Amtrak, there were approximately 341 passengers and seven crew members on board.
Initial reports are that some passengers are being treated for injuries. Local emergency responders are on the scene and an investigation is ongoing.
Northeast Corridor service between New York and Philadelphia is suspended.
